A lap halfway through the session was good enough to secure Ash Sutton his first BTCC pole of the season at Knockhill.
The Infiniti driver led the way early on before Rory Butcher, aiming for his third pole in a row, went 0.005s faster in his Ford Focus. Sutton improved his time but was still 0.003s slower than Tom Ingram, who claimed provisional pole for Toyota.
But Sutton improved again with a time of 50.535s which was good enough to take pole for Laser Tools Racing. Championship leader Colin Turkington went second fastest in his BMW before the red flags were brought out with seven minutes remaining when Matt Neal spun his Honda off the circuit.
When green flag running resumed, Jake Hill posted a late flyer to pip Turkington to a front-row spot for MB Motorsport. Dan Cammish finished fourth fastest for Honda Yuasa Racing, behind Turkington, with Ingram and Butcher dropping to fifth and sixth by the end of the session.
Mike Bushell qualified seventh for Maxed Power Racing ahead of Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat. Matt Neal hung on to ninth, despite his off, with BMW’s Tom Oliphant rounding out the top ten.
Josh Cook (BTC Racing) and Stephen Jelley (Team Parker Racing) will share the sixth row in Sunday’s first race after posting the 11th and 12th fastest times.
