Neal not underestimating 2017 competition

After missing out on his fourth title whilst his teammate took the glory, Team Dynamic’s Matt Neal will be on the hunt again this season.

Neal was one of the five drivers realistically in with a shot at the title when the British Touring Car paddock arrived at Brands Hatch last October, but a mechanical problem and injury ruled him out of the final showdown.

“I really enjoyed last year,” Neal told Overtake Motorsport. “I felt in a good place with the car and everything.”

The three time champion may have had a long, relaxing weekend, not having to worry about finding a seat for the 2017 season, but now the season is back on, and Neal has been weighing up the competition at Autosport last weekend. His assessments are pretty similar to teammate Gordon Shedden’s:

“I’m not underestimating the competition we’ll have this year,” he said. “The Subarus are going to be on it from the start. Colin [Turkington] back in the BMW, the combination of him and [Andrew Jordan] and co: that’s going to be a really tough package to beat.”

(Turkington has not confirmed where he’ll be driving this year, but many believe old team West Surrey Racing to be his main option.)

But still, Neal is optimistic about his own chances, telling Overtake Motorsport that Shedden will need to get his head around the fact that Neal is going to be the one to reach championship number four first.
