Mattias Ekstrom wins round six of the 2020 FIA World Rallycross Championship.
Ekstrom converted his TQ into pole position for the final after winning semi-final one. Joining him on the front row was Johan Kristoffersson
Ekstrom launched off the line to take the lead going into turn one. Kristoffersson was squeezed by the second KYB Team JC car of Robin Larsson, but holds onto second place.
Kristoffersson was all over the back of Ekstrom whilst behind Niclas Gronholm was tailing Larsson.
Ekstrom and Kristoffersson were able to pull away from those behind which meant that when Kristoffersson took his joker on lap five he was able to maintain second place on track ahead of Gronholm.
By having to defend from Gronholm Kristoffersson wasn’t able to get the jump on Ekstrom who took the win.
Gronholm and Kevin Hansen jokered from third and fourth on the final lap with Larsson and Timmy Hansen taking the positions from them. Gronholm finished fifth ahead of Kevin Hansen.
Kevin Hansen was promoted to the final after Timo Scheider was disqualified from the second semi-final. On the final lap Scheider squeezed Andreas Bakkerud causing a big impact for Bakkerud into the wall, ripping the front corner off his car. The race was red flagged for medical intervention. Bakkerud was classified as third in the race but was unable to compete in the final, promoting Kevin Hansen. Bakkerud is reported to be ok but has been taken for a medical check.
Timerzyanov and Szabo missed out on the final from semi-final one, whilst it was Marklund and Doran from the second semi-final.
After round six Kristoffersson leads the drivers’ championship from Ekstrom by 17 points, with Gronholm in third place. KYB Team JC extends their lead in the team championship to 43 points from Team Hansen.
World RX returns with rounds seven and eight on 17-18 October at the World RX of Catalunya.
