BTCC: Sutton holds off Turkington to win opening Knockill encounter

Ash Sutton withstood pressure from defending champion Colin Turkington to claim a lights-to-flag win in the opening BTCC race of the day at Knockhill

The Infiniti driver built up a comfortable advantage early on after leading away from pole position, while BMW’s Turkington was in a battle for second with MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill and the Toyota of Tom Ingram.

But Sutton’s advantage was diminished when the safety car was deployed when Josh Cook crashed his Honda Civic into the barriers.

Following the restart, Turkington was able to pull clear of Hill, who found himself under pressure for the final podium spot from Ingram. Sutton held on to win by 0.350s from Turkington, with Hill a further 3s adrift in third.

Ingram finished fourth, with Rory Butcher taking fifth for Motorbase ahead of the Honda Yuasa Racing pair of Dan Cammish and Matt Neal.

Tom Oliphant was eighth for BMW, with Aiden Moffatt finishing ninth after losing places to Neal and Oliphant in the closing stages in his Infiniti.

Stephen Jelley came out on top in a late battle with BTC Racing’s Tom Chilton, taking tenth spot for Team Parker Racing by 0.011s. Adam Morgan finished in 12th in a Mercedes.
